According to Jessica Marinaccio, Dean of Admissions, 32,952 high school students applied for spots in the CC and SEAS Class of 2018.

This is a 1.5% drop from last year, and puts us fifth in percentage change in applications out of the seven Ivy League schools that have reported their admissions statistics, between Princeton and Harvard. However, in total applications, Columbia is still third behind Harvard and Penn (Cornell has yet to release application data).
